Vladimir Kneller, in full Vladimir Yur’evich Kneller, was born in 1929. In 1951, he graduated with honors from Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute and was sent to work at Design Bureau-245 (Moscow). In 1954, Kneller joined the Institute of Automation and Remote Control (IARC), the USSR Academy of Sciences. Starting as a postgraduate, in November 1957 he became a senior engineer (after finishing his studies). From 1977, Kneller was Head of the Laboratory founded by him. In 1959, he defended his candidate’s dissertation in engineering; in 1972, his doctoral dissertation in engineering. In 1981, Kneller received a professorship. In 2001, he was entitled the Honored Man of Science of the Russian Federation.

Kneller was a well-known researcher and expert in automatic measurement, control, and instrumentation, the author of 3 monographs and about 130 scientific papers and inventions. He significantly contributed to the theory and development of measuring devices and transducers for objects with alternating current parameters: his pioneering R&D works laid the theoretical foundations and his inventions were implemented in many prospective industrial devices. In 1976, Kneller was awarded the USSR State Prize for the corresponding cycle of works.

In recent years, Kneller’s Laboratory developed a general theory of measurement information conversion systems and searched for new ways to improve measuring devices and transducers for alternating current parameters.

Kneller paid much attention to raising scientific personnel and teaching. First, he was Professor at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). In 1978, he became Professor at the Moscow Institute of Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Automation (MIREA).

For many years, Kneller carried out scientific organizational and public activities: various scientific and technical councils, societies, and editorial boards. From 1976, he actively worked in the International Measurement Confederation (IMEKO): the General Council, the Technical Committee on Measurement of Electrical Quantities (TC 4), and the editorial board of the journal Measurement. His many-year activities were noted with the IMEKO Distinguished Service Award (1991). For over a decade, Kneller was a member of the editorial board of the journal Automation and Remote Control; for over a quarter of a century, a member of the editorial board of the journal Instruments and Control Systems. In recent years, Kneller was a member of the editorial boards of the journals Sensors and Systems and Control Sciences. From 1974, Kneller was the permanent Editor-in-Chief of the journal Measurement, Control, Automation.
